A4 paper size in the USA and the United Kingdom

The A4 size is the most common paper size in many countries. Almost everyone recognizes the paper size used in most home printers. But what about the rest of the world? We’ll examine and compare the A4 paper size in the USA and the United Kingdom.

The standard paper size in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, A4 is the most commonly used paper size, just like in many European countries. You’ll encounter A4 at least once a day, as it’s used for countless purposes, from printing documents to writing letters, and from calendars to notebooks, brochures, and menus.

The dimensions for A4 paper—also in the United Kingdom—are 210 mm in width and 297 mm in length. (21 x 29.7 cm / 8.27 x 11.69 in).

The standard paper size in the USA

In the United States, paper sizes are a bit different, especially in North America. The A-series sizes are not the standard there. Instead of A4, the US Letter size is the standard paper size in the United States. Letter paper measures 216 mm x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches).

However, for formal letters, Americans often use Legal size paper, which is as wide as Letter but longer, measuring 216 x 356 mm (8.5 x 14 inches).

In the United States, therefore, slightly different paper sizes are used than in the United Kingdom or Europe. While the A4 paper size is the standard in Europe, the US Letter is the standard in America.
