What is half of an A4?

A4 paper is the most widely used (and therefore best known) paper size available. You can find it in nearly every home, office, and printer. Use it as stationery or print your reports on it. A4 sheets are also frequently used as the foundation for various communication materials, such as manuals, white papers, menus, and calendars. Often, half the size of an A4 is needed, which raises the question: What is half of an A4?

Because A4 paper is so common, you likely recognize its size instantly. But when sizes become larger or smaller, it’s easy to be unsure. What is half the size of an A4? Or double? We’re here to provide the answer once and for all.

Half of an A4 is A5

Paper sizes start with the base size A0, which has a surface area of 1 square meter. The number after the “A” indicates how many times you’ve folded the base size to arrive at that size. Folding an A0 once results in A1, which has half the surface area of A0. And if you fold an A0 five times, you get an A5 (half the size of an A4). This system ensures that each size is half of the previous size. The smaller the paper size, the higher the number following the “A.”

With this theory in mind, next time you’ll know immediately that half of an A4 paper is an A5. Folding an A4 paper in half gives you an A5 size paper.
